Bikeability for Year 6

Every year Southend Borough Council’s ‘Ideas in Motion’ Cycle Training Team offers free Bikeability cycle training, Level 2, to every Year 6 child in Southend. This really prepares children to ride safely on the journey to secondary school and is an essential life skill.  It is our aim that all pupils pass Bikeability Level 2 in Year 6.

Southend Borough Council’s Ideas in Motion Team work closely with Southend’s Sustran’s Bike-It Officer on a project to embed cycling into the curriculum in schools across Southend. This includes an intensive programme of cycle training. This starts by ensuring every child, in a school, can ride a bike safely.  Chalkwell Hall Junior School are part of this programme and the team are coming to school to work with the children in Year 6.

Question: What do I need to do?

Answer:  The same as whenever your child rides their bike. On the day your child will need:

  1. A bike that is of the correct size and is roadworthy (see M-Check leaflet attached);
  2. Please remove stabilisers;
  3. A cycle helmet, that fits (see overleaf);
  4. The right clothes and footwear for riding a bike outdoors and the weather conditions on the day, possibly gloves;
  5. Please bring your child’s bike to school each day of the training, bikes can be left in the playground first thing in the morning, however, they should be locked up. Please make sure your child has a key or the correct combination to unlock the bike.  Bikes should not be left in the playground overnight.

Your child must be able to cycle unaided in order for them to take part in this road safety cycle training course.  If they do not have a bike or helmet the team have a small number to borrow by prior arrangement, by returning the reply slip below. If you have any issues with anything at all please let the office know immediately and we will help where we can.

Remember practice does make perfect so the more opportunities you can give your child to cycle the better. If you have not done it already why not try cycling with them. It’s fun, it’s free and it does you all good, whatever the weather!

Helmets – Ensure the helmet is the correct size. It should fit snugly and be comfortable to wear. When the child shakes or nods their head, with the chin straps unfastened, the helmet should remain secure. The helmet rim should sit on the forehead, just above the eyebrows. The helmet should NOT be tilted back leaving the forehead exposed or tipped so far forward it covers the eyes and obstructs the child’s ability to see. The straps must not be twisted and there should be no slack in them. Most helmet straps form a ‘V’ shape just under the ear lobe.  Approved cycle helmets will have a label inside confirming they meet the safety standard EN1078.

Full face helmets are not appropriate for training as they can affect vision and the wearer’s ability to hear instructions.

Bikes – All bikes must be roadworthy with two working brakes. If you are in any doubt please take it to a bike shop to have it checked. You could perform a simple check yourself referring to the attached leaflet.

There will be a small number of bikes and helmets available to borrow, but only by prior arrangement. This is not ideal as it could delay the start of lessons. Children will benefit most from riding their own bikes, using their own helmets and being able to practice at home between sessions.

Please complete and return the slip to the office as soon as possible.  Please also complete the  permission form.  Click below for the letter and permission form.
