Newsletter – 2nd February 2018

It was great to see so many parents in school on Wednesday evening for our 11+ information session. If you missed it, all the slides from the presentation are on our website under ‘Community/News’ and key information is available at

Also, the same session is on at WHSB on Tuesday 20 February 2018 at 7pm. It is exactly the same presentation, so there is no need for those who were here on Wednesday to go along.

We have a Maths workshop for parents who would like to know more about ways to help their children with their studies next Tuesday in school so why not join us for a coffee and a croissant after you have dropped your child at school and stay for the workshop. Mr Birkinshaw and Mr Maskell, the school’s Maths team, will be available for a short time after the session for any follow up or specific questions you may have.

It’s not often you get money for nothing but for once we can. Please take a minute to sign up with and help raise funds for both the Infant and Junior schools. So far £466 has been raised with just 67 people having signed up. Just think how much we could raise with everyone using it!

Safer Internet Day

This year’s Safer Internet Day (SID) celebrations will take place on Tuesday, 6 February 2018. The 2018 theme, “Create, connect and share respect: A better internet starts with you” is a call to action for everybody to play their part in creating a better internet for everyone, in particular our youngest users. More than that, it is an invitation for everyone to join in and engage with others in a respectful way in order to ensure a better digital experience.

In order to do this, we have attached a couple of useful links all about SID which include great ways to get involved. Across the school, we will be running a competition to complete a school-wise jigsaw puzzle to show how we can make a positive impact online. Use the link to find out more information. Competition closes Monday 19th February 2018, with the winner being announced on Friday 23rd February 2018. Good luck!

 Sports news

The Year 3&4 boys took part in the Borough Football Tournament last Friday at the Len Forge Centre and did really well to make it through to the “Super 10s” part of the competition but couldn’t quite get the results to make it through to the semi-finals.

Our indoor athletics teams performed on Wednesday at Garon Park against over 20 other local schools in a noisy and action packed event. Both teams performed really well and represented Chalkwell Hall superbly with the Year 5&6 team finishing a very creditable 5th.

Our netball team played at Earls Hall on Monday and, despite losing the match by a few goals, showed that they are improving week on week and played some very good netball at times. All our teams, as ever, represented us brilliantly in the community – further enhancing our reputation as not only being good and competitive but, more importantly, having great sportsmanship and teamwork. Well done teams!

PTA news

Thank you to everyone who has supported our fundraisers this year and helped to make them such a success. So far this academic year you have helped to raise £6,721. This academic year we are working towards raising enough funds to purchase IT equipment for both schools, including computers and mobile trollies for the infants, a mixer deck for the sound system and any money remaining at the end of the school year will be saved to go towards a second minibus. We have many more exciting fundraisers planned for the spring and summer terms with full details being announced soon.
