Newsletter – 5th October 2018

Our Eco Warriors team hosted delegates from Europe today in two special assemblies to highlight the plight our planet faces with increased plastic use over the last few decades and how we can do something about it. Many of you will have seen shows on TV about this topic but one recently aired that you might like to watch is Drowning In Plastic

Our Eco Warriors will soon be announcing how Chalkwell Hall is planning to do its bit to make our planet a better place – watch this space!

Paul Geraghty visited Years 3&4 this week to deliver two inspirational assemblies on the subject of picture books, encouraging children to read, write, draw and think creatively. Paul Geraghty is an author and illustrator of children’s picture books and novels, including Slobcat, Solo, The Hunter, The Hoppameleon, Monty’s Journey and Look out, Patrick!

Our Year 6s had a great week last week, whether home or away getting up to all sorts of new experiences and overcoming fears along the way. Both groups attracted many, many positive comments from members of the public and other schools about their manners and behaviour. They all represented us  brilliantly and did themselves proud!

Sports news

Our Year 5s played a closely contested match againt St Pierre on Monday evening. For many of the team it was their first time representing us at football and they performed really well with great determination and team spirit despite narrowly losing 2-1.

Our cross country team, made up of all 4 year groups, competed in the Southend borough competition on Wednesday. Every runner gave it their all in races of over one hundred athletes at a time! Great finishes across all 8 teams and we are waiting to hear if any of our teams have made it though to the Essex finals – fingers crossed!

Attendance matters

If your child is absent from school due to illness, please make a phone call to the office every day of your child’s illness. When calling, please leave a message on the answerphone giving your child’s name, class and reason for absence.  Please be a little more specific with the reason for absence than ‘not well’ or ‘sick’ so that we can keep track of what is keeping our children out of school. Our overall attendance is 97.5%

Everyone tries to be on time and we understand that occasionally life gets in the way! If lateness is persistent it can make coming in to school uncomfortable for children, disrupt the learning of others and really affect their progress. This week there were 31 instances of children arriving late to school.
