Maths fever has swept through school this week with the introduction of Times Tables Rock Stars. Incredibly, in the space of just one week over 440,000 questions have been answered correctly by the children across the school. It has been a brilliant response to something that we hoped they would enjoy (and also find useful for learning) – homework club has never been so busy!
Two of our Governors, Mrs Ford and Mrs Rowe, have been in to school recently and met with key teachers who lead in different areas of our curriculum. They wanted to share their news with the wider school community:
This week I met with Ms. Walkom to discuss English teaching at Chalkwell. It was lovely to hear about the many ways in which the school are encouraging a love of reading in the children: that it’s not just about getting the work done, but about instilling a love that will stay with them for life. It sounds like there are some exciting new schemes coming that the children will love!
I met up with Mr Birkinshaw last week and he updated me on a really impressive set of Year 6 maths results demonstrating the effectiveness of the Maths No Problem programme. When I watched a maths class in action last term, it was clear to me that the children really enjoyed the interactive, real-life approach to solving mathematical problems that Maths No Problem delivers. There will be workshops for parents on Maths No Problem and I would really encourage you to attend if you’re able.
I had a really exciting meeting last week with Miss Sadler who looks after science here at the school. She is clearly highly skilled in science teaching and has such enthusiasm for the subject that I left her wishing my children still had their old chemistry set! There is so much going on the science department and Miss Sadler has some really exciting plans to raise the profile of science in the school. The government quite rightly is so keen to encourage children into the STEM subjects, so it’s important that we all help our children to enjoy science and see science in the world around us. The school is working towards a science quality mark which is a demonstration of pupil achievement and excellence in teaching; new equipment is being purchased to liven up practical science classes; the science fair each year focuses the school on science topics and enables students to proudly show off their science skills/knowledge; science-focused assemblies (held every half term) look at topical science issues; and the science club for Years 3-6 sees pupils earn their science certificates from the British Science Association. On top of this, boys from WHSB continue to come in to demonstrate science principles in exciting and fun ways. I look forward to finding out more next term.
Our Year 5&6 boys represented us at the SPSSA annual tournament last Friday and performed really well only losing one game all day and playing some excellent football along the way. Lots of goals shared around throughout the day and a good team spirit on show too!
The Year 4 boys continued the good work with a thumping 9-0 victory at Prince Avenue Primary School. Another great display of team spirit and sportsmanship, we have some great talent coming through!
