Food Allergies and Food Intolerances

Our school cook has asked us to make sure the information we hold on the children around allergies and intolerances is as up to date as possible. Please read through the information below and fill in the form where it applies to your child.


A food allergy is defined as:


When the body’s immune system reacts abnormally to a certain food.  Symptoms may include an itchy sensation in the mouth, a red skin rash, swelling of the face, eyes, lips and tongue.


A food intolerance is defined as:


When the body’s digestive system reacts abnormally to a certain food.  Symptoms may include bloating, nausea, diarrhoea and stomach cramps but no allergic reaction will take place.


The important differences:


  • The symptoms of a food intolerance can take hours to appear, with an allergy they will start much quicker, sometimes within seconds;
  • You need to eat a larger amount of food to trigger a food intolerance, sometimes with an allergy just smelling the food can cause a reaction to occur;
  • An allergic reaction can be life threatening, food intolerances are never of this magnitude.


The EU have issued a list of 14 recognised foods which cause allergic or intolerant reactions.  These are not the only foods that can cause a food allergy or intolerance but they have been recognised in a large enough proportion of the EU population to set them as a standard.  The 14 allergens are:


  • Celery
  • Eggs
  • Fish
  • Lupin
  • Mustard
  • Sesame Seeds
  • Soybeans
  • Milk
  • Suplhur Dioxide and Sulphites
  • Crustaceans
  • Molluscs
  • Peanut
  • Tree Nuts
  • Cereal containing gluten (including what, rye, oats, barley)

Please indicate below whether your child has an allergy or an intolerance to the following recognised foods which cause allergic or intolerant reactions:












Where will we find celery? stock/bouillon, Gravy, ready meals, crisps, celery salt, sauces, spice mixes


Where will we find eggs? quiches, flans, cakes, biscuits, pancakes, pasta, noodles, mayonnaise, some Quorn products, chocolate bars, doughnuts, processed meats and fish, mousses


Where will we find fish? fish fingers or nuggets, sushi, salads (i.e. Caesar salad), oyster sauces, fish sauce, Worcester sauce, dips, prawn crackers/crisps


Where will we find lupin? pastry cases, pies, waffles, pancakes, pizzas, onion rings, lupin flour


Where will we find mustard?  mayonnaise, processed meats, pickles, salad dressings, ketchup, barbeque sauce, marinades, mustard seeds and leaves (often used in curries)

Sesame seeds

Where will we find sesame? hummus, tahini, halvah, biscuits, crackers, breads, rice cakes, bagels, burger buns, muesli, dips, spreads, mixed spices, sesame oil, vege-burgers


Where will we find soy? Edamame, soy sauce, soya flour, tofu, soya lecithin, soy milk


Where will we find milk? milk, milk powder, milk drinks, all cheeses (unless specified), butter, margarine, yoghurt, cream, ice cream, processed meat (i.e. sausages), sauces, breakfast cereals, ready meals, chocolate, cakes, biscuits, batters


Where will we find sulphites? soup mixes, jams, pickled foods, prawns, molasses, dried fruit, peeled potatoes, guacamole, vegetable juices, canned vegetables


Where will we find crustaceans? crab, lobster, crayfish, shrimp, prawn


Where will we find molluscs?  mussels, clams, scallops, oysters, limpets, snails, squid, octopus, cuttlefish, cockles


Where will we find peanuts? oils, biscuits, peanut butter, chocolate spread, sweet mincemeat, cakes (in particular fruit cakes), muesli, desserts, sweets, satay

Tree nuts

Where will we find tree nuts?  almonds, cashews, macadamia, pecans, walnut, pistachio, marzipan, hazelnuts, brazil nuts, nut butters, cereals, crackers, nut oils, chocolates

Cereals containing gluten

Where will we find gluten? any products containing wheat, barley, rye, spelt, kamut, bread, pizza bases, crackers, muffins, couscous, bulgar wheat, porridge oats, stock/bouillon, soy sauce, pasta and noodles, breaded fish, chicken or vegetables, breakfast cereals, suet, pretzels, liquorice,  sausages and processed meats
