Newsletter – 13th September 2019

A very busy first full week back at school finished with a flourish as Roald Dahl Day took over. Fantastic outfits, some incredible creations and a whole lot of fun celebrating one of our favourite authors!

Conkers before and after school club has been celebrating the 10th anniversary of opening at Chalkwell Hall Schools. The after school club opened on the 10th September 2009 to a small number of children and has grown over that time to 80 spaces available each day to families of the schools providing fun for the children and affordable childcare for parents.

This week the children took part in activities that included a treasure hunt, water play, using cornflour in the playground and an assault course on the new wooden play equipment. On display outside the entrance of the Conker clubs is a collage the children have created which includes a birthday cake and a conker tree with the leaves made from the children’s handprints. Congratulations to Mrs Roe and her team for making it such a success over the last 10 years!

Please do not bring dogs onto the school premises (this includes the car park and playground). Please do not tie your dog to the railings or allow them to obstruct the entrances to the school. No matter how gentle your animal is, some of our children are very scared of the dogs.

As always at this time of year, we have children returning to school having had their ears pierced. The advice from Southend Primary School Sports Association is that all jewellery should be removed by the child themselves for all PE lessons. If that cannot happen then the teacher will make a call on whether the activity can be adapted to be safe for the individual child. Taping them up and carrying on regardless is not really an option, particularly in team sports or activities where there is a risk of contact. Where safe participation cannot be assured then the pupil cannot take part in that element of the lesson.

Attendance matters

This week there were 25 times when a child arrived late to school. Of course there are times when this is unavoidable due to traffic or an emergency but if children are regularly late to school it has a detrimental effect on their learning.
