Newsletter – 22nd November 2019

I have had the huge privilege of being able to watch lots of different groups of our children represent school this week. We kicked off with the Year 5&6 netballers away to Thorpe Hall on Monday who performed superbly. They all played with great team spirit passing well to create lots of chances to score but couldn’t quite get the win despite dominating for large periods of the match. Well played girls, there will be plenty of victories in the near future!

Our Year 3&4 dodgeballers competed in the first ever competition for this age group and they were fantastic. They won two and lost two, coming 3rd in their group and showing some superb skills in the process.

Our Year 5&6 boys played two matches at Our Lady of Lourdes and came out victorious with 4-1 and 5-3 wins. They are also playing today at the Len Forge Centre in the annual SPSSA tournament so fingers crossed for some more wins!

To top off an amazingly successful week, our Year 5&6 girls competed in the Essex finals in Chelmsford after qualifying as runners up in the Southend competition. An incredible team effort through the group stages (winning all 5 games and not conceding a single goal), saw the team move into the final and dominate that as well to bring home the trophy as Essex Champions! Despite the freezing cold weather, the whole squad were outstanding from beginning to end. They have now qualified for the regional competition against other area champions from the South East and London.

The winning is great but what makes me even prouder is the brilliant teamwork, effort and sporting attitude that our children display when they are out representing us and showcasing their talents. Also, my thanks to the travelling fans who brave the cold to support and cheer the teams on. Well done all of you – we couldn’t be prouder!

A word from our Junior Governors

This term we have organised various charity events. The first was supporting Southend Foodbank through our harvest collections. The next was the Big Sleep Out in support of HARP, when certain children, who were voted by their classes, got to experience what it would be like to be homeless. Finally, we have supported Children in Need by everyone coming to school in non-school uniform and donating £1. We would like to say thank you to everyone for supporting our events!

 Governor news

We had a visit from one of our Governing Body members, Mrs Ford, last week: “Today I met with Mr Hanshaw to find out about children achieving a greater depth level in their work at school. It was interesting to find out how this is measured and how teachers ensure children make good progress as they move through the school. I am encouraged to hear that the school wants children working at a higher level to achieve mastery of a subject, where they not only understand what they are doing but are able to explain it to and assist their peers, making them all round great learners!”

With just 1 week to go until our Christmas Events begin, we are still looking for a few more volunteers to help with the following:

  • FAYRE SET UP (Saturday 30th November, anytime from 9am)
  • RUNNING A STALL AT THE FAYRE (Saturday 30th November, anytime between 12-4pm)
  • CLEARING UP THE FAYRE (Saturday 30th November, from 4pm)

So if you have any time to spare (even just 1 hour would be wonderful) please email, all offers of help are greatly appreciated and without you these events wouldn’t be possible.
