From the 2019/20 academic year onwards, schools are required to administer an online multiplication tables check (MTC) to Year 4 pupils. This will take place during a 3-week window in June.
The purpose of the MTC is to determine whether pupils can recall their times tables (up to and including 12 x 12) fluently, which is essential for future success in mathematics, eg. supporting work in fractions, division and word problems.
During the Spring Term, we will continue to administer our fortnightly Times Tables Stars challenge. In addition, in Year 4 we will be carrying out a ‘Cold’ Test on Mondays (on a specific table or tables) and a ‘Hot’ Test on Fridays, to encourage the children to improve their times tables recall. The children will be made aware of the focus times table(s) on Friday for the following week.
Regular practice of times tables at home is extremely beneficial and we would appreciate your support. This can be carried out in a variety of ways, including the use of programs such as Times Tables Rockstars and Hit the Button; Sound Check on TT Rockstars actually replicates the online MTC.
If you have any questions or would like to discuss this further, please contact Mrs Weir or Mrs Harris.
Thank you for your continued support.
