Newsletter – 13th March 2020

Our talented children have been out and about again displaying their skills. This week we had our sitting volleyball and indoor athletics teams performing at the Essex finals after qualifying to progress from the borough competitions. Both teams did themselves and us proud, as always, with the athletics squad coming away as officially the 4th best in the whole of Essex and the volleyball team securing silver medals after narrowly missing out in the final. Brilliant achievements and memories for the children that will last a very long time – well done Team Chalkwell!

We also have a team representing us at gymnastics this afternoon. Another first for us and great to have even more of our children getting the chance to show what they can do. Our girls are playing football against Fairways this afternoon too – good luck all of you!

Year 5 had a fascinating trip to Braintree Museum yesterday where they took a step back in time and got to experience what life was like in a Victorian classroom (and they think I’m strict!). A fascinating insight into a very different era that will hopefully inspire them back in our modern day classrooms.

Coronavirus

Firstly, I would like to thank parents and carers for their sensible approach to the ongoing worldwide pandemic.

We continue to follow DfE and NHS guidance on hygiene in school and we will continue to update you with the advice from those bodies about travel restrictions and the need to self-isolate where necessary. We have had families in self-isolation as a precautionary measure and we have had no confirmed cases up to this point.

The new guidance ( https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19 ) advises to stay at home for 7 days if you have either:

  • A high temperature
  • A new, continuous cough

Do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital and you do not need to contact 111.

Our present instructions are to stay open, carry on as usual with the business of being a school and to make sure that handwashing is frequent and thorough. If anything changes in that regard, we have contingency plans in place and will update if (hopefully not when) necessary. The situation changes every day and we will update our plans in line with the advice and instructions we are given from the government.

Parking

We have had local residents calling in to complain that parents have been parking over drives again. Please be considerate when parking. Parking is extremely difficult around school but local residents still need to be able to get in and out of their drives too!

Odd Socks Day

Next week is National Diversity Celebration Week and in our assemblies the children will be given the opportunity to deepen their understanding about what this means. As well as this, on Friday 20th March 2020, to mark World Down Syndrome Day, we will be holding an odd sock day and would welcome as many children as possible to take part in this event.
