Newsletter – 16th October 2020

I cannot believe it is the penultimate week of the first half term already! It has been an interesting journey and I am so proud of how the children, and parents/carers, have adapted and settled into the changes that we have had to make in and around school to make it safe yet inviting and manageable. I commend you all for your efforts!

Firstly, thank you to those families who have donated food to our ‘Harvest’ collection for the charity Southend Foodbank. We have had an overwhelming response, so much so, that we will extend the collection deadline to Thursday 22nd October for any further donations coming in for this worthy cause.

Week 2 of Bikeability for year 6 saw 6DS and 6AD battle the elements to complete their Level 2 training. Well done to all of those hardened riders! 6TF will be the last class to take part in Bikeability, which means there will continue to be more bicycles being walked through the playground at drop off and pick up times next week, so please be mindful at the times.

Year 6 Parents are also reminded that the deadline for submitting your Secondary School preference forms is fast approaching. Applications need to be submitted by 31st October 2020. Details can be found on our school Facebook page or by visiting

Thank you to all of the parents/carers for wearing a face covering when entering the school site. The Local Authority is introducing the ‘School Gate Campaign’, which is aimed to promote the wearing of face coverings, encourage social distancing and other Covid-19 preventative measures at school drop-off and pick-up points. Thank you in advance for your support in this matter. I hope that you will agree that it is a very small inconvenience for a much greater good. We really want to avoid children being absent from school and any form of closure.

We have been given a batch of disposable facemasks, which will be offered by staff to parents/carers/grandparents who may have forgotten to bring theirs on the school run.  We will be running a poster competition to promote the wearing of masks for visiting adults on school site where the winning designs will be displayed at key points around school grounds. Details will be released in class next week.

Earlier this week, you should have received two letters, one from our Chair of Governors and another from Southend Borough Council. They outline the current process of consultation for potential amalgamation, as part of Southend Borough Council’s Head teacher recruitment process for Infant & Junior Schools.  Please see recent letters on the website.

CHJS & Southend Borough Council want as many members of the community as possible to have their say. To help inform everyone’s views, they have provided a tab on the consultation’s website under the title ‘More Information about This Consultation’.

Southend Borough Council have advised that staff and governors at both schools cannot make any formal comments on the proposal.

To find out more about the possible merger and why Southend Borough Council are considering this, and to complete the online survey, please visit:
