12A Rated Film – The Breadwinner (Year 6)

As we are approaching the start of our next topic on Cultures, we are asking for your support on a few matters, if possible.

The children have many questions regarding different cultures and we are hoping to explore BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) groups within this topic to help them gain a better understanding of the lives of those people around them. We would like to offer the children the opportunity to listen to different stories, experiences or insights from these different cultures. If you feel that you are able to help in any way, please email your class teacher via the class email address to discuss further.

As part of this new topic, we will be studying the book, ‘Parvana’s Journey.’ We would like to watch the prequel to this story, entitled ‘The Breadwinner.’ It is an animation drama in which a young Afghan girl named Parvana disguises herself as a boy in order to provide for her family.

The film has been rated a 12 on the British Board of Film Classification due to the following reasons:

THREAT

A child is caught amidst gunfire and bombing. Two young children are chased by a machine gun-wielding Taliban member. Prisoners are marched at gunpoint by Taliban soldiers; it is implied that they are to be executed. A man threatens a woman with a knife. Milder threat occurs in fantasy sequences in which a boy encounters fearsome creatures and dangerous storms.

VIOLENCE

Two women are beaten: we hear the sounds of the impacts but the blows occur off-screen. A man is shot, resulting in his shirt sleeve being covered in blood. A man punches a child in the stomach, knocking her to the ground.

As the above content is quite sparse, having watched the film, we are able to edit out anything deemed inappropriate without disrupting the story; leaving the children with an age appropriate version. We believe that it would give them a greater context into Afghanistan culture and will provide them with some of the answers that they have regarding the culture surrounding the book.

If you would like any more information on the film, or would like to see the trailer, please find the link below.  Please do contact us if you would like to discuss the story further before responding.

As we are trying to limit the chance of transmission of the Coronavirus in school we would prefer an email response rather than a paper reply slip.  Please only reply via email if you do not give permission for your child to watch ‘The Breadwinner’.   If we do not hear from you we will assume that you give permission.  You can reply to the class email address or to the office email address.  Please email responses by 6th November 2020.  Please reply with the subject line as: Edited 12 Rated Film ‘the Breadwinner’.  Please give your child’s name, class and statement indicating that you do not give permission to watch the edited 12A rated film.

This topic will probably raise a lot of questions both at school and at home, but we would like to stress to you that any questions surrounding this topic will be addressed in class and will be answered with due care and sensitivity. Please remember that the Year 6 teachers are here to support you via email if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you for your continued co-operation.
