Newsletter – 9th November 2018

If you see some very weary looking children and teachers today that’s because The Big Sleep In took place in school last night. 17 brave volunteers (along with the staff members) represented their classes in building their beds from the materials they had to hand in an effort to gather a better understanding of how hard life on the streets can be for those less fortunate than ourselves and also to raise funds to help that situation improve. Already lots of much needed funds have been raised for HARP and you can donate here school?fbclid=IwAR3rkDEAFMod7UQJJWMiUPwcCXsBPJtHSizVjjTF3wyAYWXRRp3ufDwvTa8 if you would like to. Well done to all involved – I hope you make it through today!

Year 5 have been enjoying WHSB’s Science Roadshow again this week and Year 3 have been out and about at the library.

Some big news this week is the big (in all senses) cheque that we received from our brilliant PTA. Both schools have received £17,000 each as a result of all the hard fundraising work that our PTA, staff and children have done supported by our fantastic families and community.  A good chunk of that money has gone towards purchasing a new minibus and the rest will be spent on upgrading our science equipment and computing equipment so the children can have the best opportunities that we would otherwise struggle to provide given the budget cuts that we have faced over the last few years. Our enormous thanks to our PTA for their endeavours in helping us to achieve this great level of fundraising for our children!

 Sports news

Our Year 5&6 boys are out representing school at a football tournament in Canvey Island today and I received a lovely report from one of our Governors, Mr Neife, who recently attended a cross country team event at Thorpe Hall School. He told me, “As a parent I was proud of my son’s success and as a governor I was equally proud of how the school performed collectively. Each year group’s performance was astonishing and from a sporting point of view one could see potential stars for the future. Their behaviour as a group is worthy to note. All were well behaved and listened to instructions from the teachers at the venue. It’s worth thanking the parents who made it there, they shared a strong team spirit supporting all categories in the event and for the pupils a very big well done including the staff.” Great to hear – well done all!

Newsletter – 29th June 2018

There’s only three weeks left of term (where did the time go?) and still loads to pack in before the end of the year.

On Monday we will have sports day, with Years 3 & 4 (10:00-12:00) in the morning and Years 5 & 6 in the afternoon (1:00-3:00) with lunch in the park in between. It’s set to stay hot according to the forecast so plenty of sun cream, hats and water please!

The majority of our Year 6 pupils will be heading off to their new schools for taster days over the next couple of weeks and Years 3, 4 & 5 children will all meet their new teachers on Friday 6th July 2018.

Half our Year 4s had a cracking day out in London at Madam Tussauds this week as part of their topic studies. They all had a great time and represented school brilliantly while they were out and about, great work Year 4!  We are negotiating with Madam Tussauds regarding a new date for the other half of Year 4.

We recently entered some of our children’s artwork into the Leigh Art Trail ‘Me on Sea’ competition and, in amongst all the great pieces entered,  we had four pieces of work that were highly commended by the judges from Susie Larke, Josephine Cole, Amy Simpson and Jack Belton along with a third place prize for Beatrice Robinson.

We are liaising with St Pierre who would like to display Chalkwell’s artwork in their end of year Art Exhibition which will take place on Saturday 14th July 2018 from 2.00pm-4.00pm. There will be music and refreshments and a real celebration of local student artwork.

Our cricket team, fresh from winning the Southend Borough competition, competed at the Essex finals this week. The competition was only the winners and runners up from the various areas of Essex so was a lot tougher than the local one. We started slowly, with a few nerves and narrowly lost our opening two games but rallied and followed up with two wins to leave us somewhere in the middle of the rankings. The boys have represented us brilliantly in both events with a fantastic positive attitude throughout and we couldn’t be prouder, well done team!

Solving Problems with Maths Workshop – Tuesday 6th February 2018 @ 8.45am

Are you looking for ways to support your child at home with maths? Would you like to learn more about how we support and challenge all pupils within lessons?

Next week we will be running a Maths workshop to look at how you can best support your child in the Juniors, which we hope will help to answer the questions above, and a few more.

The workshop is designed to show you how we teach mathematics, explaining the progression in our calculation strategies and how we develop children’s problem solving skills.  There will be ideas and games for you to use to support your child at home, both in areas that they struggle with or are confident in. The session will be covering areas and skills relevant to all year groups and abilities.

Mr Birkinshaw and Mr Maskell, the school’s Maths team, will also be available for a short time after the session for any follow up or specific questions you may have.

Why not join us for a coffee and a croissant after you have dropped your child at school and stay for the workshop.

To help us plan this event, please complete and return the slip attached to the letter.
