Newsletter – 22nd June 2018

A successful week all round here at school.  With dance workshops, art trips, athletics competitions and poetry festivals we’ve had a bit of something for everyone to show their talents!

Our Drama Club performed/competed at the Leigh Art Festival this morning, showing 3 pieces of spoken word performance poetry. Both groups were fantastic and showed great skill and confidence to perform in front of the judges. Their level of performance was genuinely outstanding and we are incredibly proud of them to both come away with gold medals and honours. The effort that they have put into rehearsals with Mr Fleury has very much paid off and we are the first non-private school to have our name on one of the trophies!

Our athletes were also performing at their peak this week at the annual Borough Sports at Garon Park. Every point counts from all the events with over 60 children taking part in track or field events. I am delighted to announce that we won the track event and came 2nd in the overall competition. A fantastic effort by all the team and I’m even prouder of the way that our children conducted themselves whilst out representing us in the community again. Great work team!

I would love to share photos of all this success with you, as well as our PGL photos, but we still have lots of children without their permission slips returned so we are struggling to publish anything at the moment, particularly group and team photos. Please get them back to us!

Year 6 have taken part in a dance and body percussion workshop this week, in preparation for their leavers’ assembly. They have been working with Omari Carter, a professional screen-dance producer, choreographer and director of the Motion Dance Collective dance company.

Omari Carter used to work with the London and touring cast of the West End hit, ‘Stomp’. It has been an honour having him at Chalkwell and we know that the children have had a great time learning new skills.

Year 5 have also been getting creative this week with an art trip to the beach. They showed off their creative flair using materials they found on the shoreline to create all sorts of impressive pieces!

The final non-pupils days have been booked for the 2018-2019 academic year. They are all attached to the assigned holidays so hopefully they should enable families to book slightly cheaper holidays. The dates are:

Weds 5th September 2018

Monday 29th October 2018

Thursday 20th December 2018

25th February 2019

24th May 2019

Club letters went out on Wednesday electronically to those who receive emails, those that have declined emails got a hard copy. If anyone would like a paper copy, please ask in the office and they will be happy to provide one.  Choices need to be back in the office by Friday 29th June at the latest.

The Secondary School Booklet for Southend-on-Sea schools and residents is now available on the Council website with the aim of providing you with details as early as possible, however the application window is only between 1st September 2018 and 31st October 2018 and therefore applications can only be submitted during this time.

And finally a couple of reminders. Class photo requests must be back by 27th June please and we are having to put up the cost of school dinners from September. A small rise means the new price will be £2.30.

Year 2 transition week – arrangements for Year 3

This week sees the start of transition activities for the current Year 2s, as they begin to get used to their new surroundings for September. As you may remember from last year, part of the transition arrangements is that each Year 2 class will spend two days in a Year 3 classroom with their own teachers.

To accommodate this, the Year 3 classes will be swapping places with the Year 2s and being taught in the Infants classrooms. Each class will be based at the Infants for two days. They will continue with their Junior school day with their normal teachers, just in a different location.

On these days, your child will need to arrive for registration in their Infant classroom, and be collected from there at the end of the day. Please see below for details of which days and classrooms your child will be in.

Tuesday 19th June and Wednesday 20th June:

3SR need collecting from India classroom
3HH need collecting from Japan classroom
3GB and 3GT collected from the Juniors as normal

Monday 25th June and Tuesday 26th June:

3GT need collecting from Mexico classroom
3GB need collecting from Egypt classroom

3SR and 3HH collected from the Juniors as normal

The Infant classrooms for Japan, Mexico and Egypt are in the demountables at the back of the playground, with Japan the nearest to the playground, then Mexico and Egypt the furthest. Class India is in the main Infant building, nearest to the reception play area opposite the tree house.

On the days not listed above, everything continues as normal and children should be collected from their usual classroom.

Thank you for your continued support.

Newsletter – 18th June 2018

Another week of celebrating great achievements by our talented children! Our girls competed on Tuesday at Garon Park in the annual Southend Cricket Tournament and performed really well, dominating their group games and winning handsomely to come top of their group and make it through to the quarter final stage. Unfortunately they were very narrowly defeated in that match when looking good to go all the way. The team were disappointed but we were very proud of the way they played throughout the tournament with great team spirit and a lot of laughs!

The boys did even better on Wednesday and came away as Borough Champions after winning every game on their way to the final comprehensively and then holding their nerve in a tight game against Bournes Green which went right to the last couple of balls. Their team spirit and fantastic attitude saw them over the line and they thoroughly deserved their victory, not just because they played well but because of the way they exemplified our school core values throughout the day. Well done boys, on to the Essex finals!

More talented children were on display last night, performing at the Cliffs Pavilion for the Southend Music Festival. The children sang and played beautifully for an appreciative and very large crowd. Well done musicians, all your hard work paid off!

And finally, we have just about recovered from a cracking weekend away with a lovely group of 150+ Year 3&4 children (despite waking me up at 4:30am!). Great weather, great children and a great staff team willing to go the extra mile to provide opportunities that wouldn’t otherwise be an option for our school. Thanks to all of our brilliant adults who gave up their weekends to make it such a successful trip once again. We are looking forward to a lay in this weekend!

Newsletter – 8th June 2018

A first for Chalkwell Hall this week in the shape of a winners trophy at the borough swimming gala! Obviously we don’t have a pool so it takes a lot of chasing around to find out who can do what well in advance of the competition. It was a great team performance with lots of individual highlights too. Well done team and our thanks to all the parents who did time trials with the children in advance to give Mr Robinson and Miss Flewitt the information they needed to put the team together!

We recently took part in a local art competition in association with the Leigh Art Trail. They have informed us that the winning entries and runners-up are on display in St. Clements Church on the Leigh Broadway. There are voucher prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in key stage 1 and 2 as well as a little something for the highly commended. These will be sent back to school with the winning entry along with all of the artwork produced by our children. Fingers crossed for some winners!

The Church has limited opening times so please check on their website to see when it is available to view. Also check on the Leigh Art trail website for other exhibitions that are on throughout the coming week in Leigh 9th June-16th June.

We are off on PGL this weekend and there are so many permission slips still to be returned that we aren’t going to be able to share any photos with you while we are away. Get them in as soon as possible please! Thank you to those who have already returned them but we need to have the rest of your permissions for photo use so we can go back to sharing all the great things our children are doing with you.

And finally, a tremendous example from two of our pupils of thinking of others from Lily Bradshaw and Martha Callaghan who got busy baking cookies and raised £135 for The Stand Up to Cancer Bake Off.  Well done girls!

Governor news:

Mrs Rowe and Mrs Sanders came in to visit us recently to see how we work in different aspects of school life:

On the last day before half term, I enjoyed observing a morning maths lesson with a year 4 class. The maths lesson ran from 8.35 until 10.00 and I left with a clear view that the students really enjoyed maths and were very good at it! I was very impressed in several areas. The maths is taught in such an engaging fashion that works to complement the way children study best. The mornings are generally when children are fresher and brighter and more engaged so maths lessons are timetabled after registration. Although the lesson appears quite long, it is broken up into manageable chunks, and creative solutions to real-life, multi-step maths challenges are encouraged through class debate. A variety of innovative and interesting tools and resources are used by the teachers and these keep the children engaged and motivated whilst also instilling a sense of independence in problem-solving through class discussions. Finally, I was so impressed with the class that I observed. Not only did they demonstrate some very remarkable maths skills, they also showed great respect to their environment, to their teacher and to each other. It was lovely to see the school’s core values brought to life so effectively: ‘enquiry, responsibility, co-operation, resilience, creativity and respect’.

I visited the school just before half term to find out about the Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural elements within the school, and also to see how the school fulfils its requirements in line with Equal Opportunities, Ethnic Minorities and Race Equalities. It’s clear that the school’s six core values are embedded in CHJS’s ethos and guides how it operates on a daily basis. These are values that the children themselves came up with – Enquiry, Responsibility, Cooperation, Resilience, Creativity and Respect. Assemblies are structured around these values and there is opportunity for children to discuss what it means to live by these values. The school strives to ensure everyone at the school gets the same opportunities, for example through the selection of sporting teams – they’re not just picked on ability but on how well children can represent the school. The very many clubs that are often offered on a rotational basis mean that there’s plenty of ways for all children to get involved. Next time, I’m going to come in and chat to the children and get their take on the core values, feeling safe and the rules they have to abide by. I’ll keep you posted!

Chalkwell Hall Junior School Newsletter – 25th May 2018

You’ll notice a distinct lack of photos on this week’s newletter. This is because of the new GDPR data protection rules. The new regulations mean that we have to ask you all to reconfirm your permission for specific uses of photos and videos. Nothing has changed really – we still want to use them in just the same ways that we always have, on newsletters, our website, facebook, twitter etc to keep you all up to date with our successes in school – apart from the fact that we have to ask you all to sign up again! It’s horrible having to ask children to step out of a photo if they don’t have permission to be in it, so please get these back in as soon as possible and then we can continue to share the achievements of Chalkwell Hall with our community just as we always have.

Go Bonkers was a huge success on Friday night – our thanks to everyone who supported us and particularly to all our volunteers for helping the event to go so smoothly and successfully.

Another great success from last Friday was our Year 5&6 boys who earned a share of the Champions Trophy. We decided against penalties in the event of a draw so we will share the honour of being champions with Bournes Green Juniors. It’s the fourth year out of the last five that we have had our names on the trophy and, having won league one as well, it caps off another very successful year for the Moltino and Robinson management team. Well done boys, a game played with great team spirit!

Our Netballers competed at Garon Park on Tuesday and did us proud as always. After a tough start, losing 3 out of the first 4 games by narrow margins, the girls fought their way back to win all 4 of their games after the lunch break! Great resilience on display along with some excellent netball. Well done girls, a great comeback and all played the right way with smiles on your faces!

PTA news

What a fabulous afternoon and evening last Friday at our Inflatable Fun Day with Go Bonkers. The sun was shining, the Pimms and Prosecco were flowing and it was so lovely to see the happy smiles on the children’s faces and them thoroughly enjoying themselves! Thank you to all the staff and parent volunteers on the day and to everyone who supported this event; together we raised a fantastic £3290!!!

Preparation for the biggest event on our calendar, our Summer Fete on Saturday 30th June 2018, 12-3pm is now in full swing. Photo and Video Permission

At Chalkwell Hall Junior School we sometimes take photographs of pupils. We use these photos in the school’s prospectus, on the school’s website, on the school’s Twitter and Facebook pages, on the weekly newsletter and on display boards around school. We may, sometimes, also take video recordings of children taking part in school activities or when the children are on residential trips, which we use in class or assemblies and on our Twitter and Facebook pages.

Every year we also provide the opportunity for you to purchase individual photographs of your child and class photographs, these are taken by external photographers.

We would like your consent to take photos or video recordings of your child, and use them in the ways described above. If you’re not happy for us to do this, that’s no problem – we will accommodate your preferences.  Please complete the slip on the letter and return to the school office.

If you change your mind at any time, you can let us know by emailing office@chalkwellhall-jun.southend.sch.uk, calling the school on 01702 478570 or just popping in to the school office and speaking to a member of the office team.

Why are we asking for your consent again?

You may be aware that there are new data protection rules coming in from May. To ensure we are meeting the new requirements, we need to re-seek your consent to take and use photos and videos of your child. We really value using photos and videos of pupils, to be able to showcase what pupils do in school and show what life at our school is like to parents and the wider community, so we would appreciate you taking the time to give consent again.

Please return the reply slip on the letter by Tuesday 5th June 2018.  If you have any other questions, please get in touch.
