23rd May 2019

Another half term has flown by and it’s been just as much fun and had just as much to celebrate as all the others! Go Bonkers was fantastic last Friday, our thanks to all who helped run it and also to those and came along to bounce – or watch and drink Pimms!

Our girls had the amazing experience of playing football on the pitch at Roots Hall last Friday. Having won their league, they qualified for the Champion of Champions game against West Leigh. The girls did an amazing job and showed lots of determination against formidable opponents but sadly could not get the win on the day. They did, however, collect their League Winners medals and trophies and should be incredibly proud of their achievements this year.

Our athletes from all year groups took to the track and field at Garon Park yesterday and represented us superbly. Some great individual performances in the team across all four events that they participated in. Stars of the future on display!

Jobs at school

A reminder that we are looking to recruit our own team of in house cleaners at Chalkwell Hall. We are looking for 4 cleaners and 1 cleaning supervisor. Cleaners will be required from 4pm to 6:15pm and the Supervisor will be required from 4pm to 6:30pm. If you, or anyone you know, might be interested please have a look at the adverts on our website https://chalkwellhall.co.uk/vacancies/

PTA news

What a fabulous afternoon and evening last Friday was at our Inflatable Fun Day with Go Bonkers. It was so lovely to see the happy smiles on the children’s faces and them thoroughly enjoying themselves! Thank you to everyone who volunteered and supported the event; together we raised over a fantastic £3,000!

Preparations for the biggest event on our calendar, the Summer Fete on Saturday 29th June, 12-3pm, are now in full swing.

We are kindly asking for volunteers to help set up on the day, help to run a stall and/or clear away. If you are able to volunteer any time, even just an hour, please email ptachalkwellhall@gmail.com; all help is very much appreciated.

Don’t forget you can purchase your discounted tickets for Adventure Island throughout the Half Term holiday at Coulson James on Leigh Broadway.

PTA Events – Go Bonkers Tickets

Go Bonkers ticket sales

As mentioned in the school newsletter over the last couple of weeks, the PTA have set up a new “Events and Ticket Sales” website aimed at streamlining much of the PTA administration for both ourselves and the schools.

The website, which can be accessed via the link below is where you can now purchase “Go Bonkers” wristbands (see details below) – so please go online, register today and purchase your required wristbands.

https://www.pta-events.co.uk/chalkwellhallpta

Go Bonkers

The ever popular after school inflatable fundraiser is returning to the school playground this year on Friday, 17 May 2019 where children will have unlimited access to a large selection of inflatables for the duration of their chosen session. The times for each session are as follows:

Early session – starts at 15:30 and ends at 17:30

Late session – starts at 18:00 and ends at 20:00

All children attending MUST be accompanied by an adult for the entire session and sensible clothes and socks must be worn. Entry to each session is only possible by purchasing an event wristband for each child which MUST be worn to the event. We are delighted to announce that the price remains the same as last year at:

Pre-school aged children – £5

School aged children – £8

Wristbands will be sold on a first come, first served basis and places are limited so, to avoid disappointment, please go online and book your places as soon as possible. The final booking date, subject to places still being available, will be 19 April 2019.

All online bookings require the name and class of each child attending as wristbands will be sent home in advance of the event, via the school, to the first child named on each reservation. You are welcome to purchase wristbands for younger siblings who are not yet attending either school but, in this case, please select “Younger Sibling” from the bottom of the dropdown class list during the payment process.

To avoid additional administration for both the PTA and the schools, we would like to sell all the Go Bonkers wristbands through the Events website so please try, wherever possible, to purchase your wristbands in this way.

If this is really not possible then please send in a written request via the school receptions enclosing the correct payment (cheques made payable to “Chalkwell Hall Schools PTA”), the session required and each attending child’s name and class details in an envelope marked FOA “PTA Go Bonkers” However, if the maximum spaces available are sold out online by the time your written request is received then it will have to be returned.

Volunteers – one essential requirement for the event to proceed is that we need volunteers to supervise and ensure the safety of the children on the inflatables as well as assist on the PTA refreshment stalls. We need approximately 25 parent / carer volunteers for each session and so request your help. In previous years, we have received fantastic support for this fun filled event and so if you are able to help please click to volunteer where prompted on the Events website when purchasing your wristbands and we will then contact all volunteers to confirm arrangements.

Refreshments – the usual refreshments will be available to purchase at the event including drinks (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic), hot dogs, ice cream, crepes and waffles, candyfloss and popcorn.

We thank you for your continued support of the PTA

Newsletter – 8th February 2019

It was Safer Internet Day on Tuesday this week and the children have been looking at various aspects of staying safe in our increasingly digitalised world. Many thanks to all parents and carers who have already responded to Miss Brady’s questionnaire about internet use, each one helps us get a better understanding of what the children are experiencing and means we can plan even better to tailor the messages we need to get across to them.

Our non-pupil dates for the academic year 2019-2020 have been confirmed for both schools. The five days will be 3rd & 4th September 2019 and 20th, 21st & 22nd July 2020. These seem like a long way away but hopefully knowing this far in advance means you might be able to get in early and book a slightly cheaper holiday!

Year 5 have certainly been busy recently. The whole year group enjoyed a visit to Westcliff High School to watch a production of the musical, Guys and Dolls. A great performance was enjoyed by the children with some experiencing their first musical. 5CF and 5LR also enjoyed sessions with the Bikeability Fix Teams. They learnt all about how to look after their bikes, including some hands on experience in finding and repairing punctures. Last week, they got to examine some incredible pieces from outer space including meteorites and actual samples of rock from the moon – go Year 5!

There has been a noticeable improvement in adherence to our uniform policy this week – thank you. Please keep it in mind when the next pair of shoes are being purchased or you are considering ear piercings!

Sports news

We recently received some smart new running vests courtesy of local business Planet Leasing. Hopefully this will inspire our brilliant athletes on to even greater success!

Our girls are playing at Prince Avenue Primary after school today (fingers crossed for the weather!) and the boys are playing in the finals of the Turner Cup at Bournes Green Juniors tomorrow morning – good luck both teams!

Theatre tickets

If you are looking for an idea to keep your children entertained during the Easter break you might consider taking them to see the hit West End musical “Everybody’s talking about Jamie” which Time Out magazine rated 5 stars and described as “A joyous punch in the air about following your dreams and being yourself”. We have reserved discounted tickets for the evening performance on 10th April 2019 at the Apollo Theatre, London. The tickets, located in rows G-L of the stalls, are available at £39 per person compared with £65 from the box office. We were only able to secure a limited number of seats, so to avoid disappointment please email the PTA as soon as possible at the address below. Please note payment for this show will be required, at the latest, by 17th February.

Thank you to everyone who voted in our recent poll on preferred West End theatre tickets. The top two requested shows were confirmed as Wicked and Les Miserables. We have initially reserved discounted tickets for “Wicked” and will look to offer tickets for Les Miserables over the coming months. Tickets for Wicked are available, for the matinee performance on Saturday 22nd June 2019, in rows G-P of the stalls at a discounted price of £40 per person, compared with £71.75 at the box office. Payment for this show will be required, at the latest, by 24th February.

We are also taking reservations for discounted tickets at the Cliffs Pavilion to the matinee performances of Peter Pan on Friday 20th December 2019 and Thursday 2nd January 2020, as well as Grease for the matinee performance on Saturday 27th July 2019 and Cirque Beserk for the matinee performance on Sunday 22nd September 2019.

If you would like to secure discounted tickets for any of these shows, please email ptachstheatre@gmail.com.

Southend’s best loved arts and music festival, Village Green, returns to Chalkwell Park this summer. The organisers, Metal Culture, have kindly agreed to donate £1 to the Chalkwell Hall schools, at no additional cost to yourselves, for every ticket purchased via the link below. Early Bird discounted tickets to Village Green are on sale now, so if you plan to attend, please purchase your tickets via this link and help us raise funds for our schools.

Co-op

By becoming a member of the Co-op, which you can do online or arrange in store, not only will you receive cash credits to the value of 5% on selected products purchased from their businesses but you can also help raise valuable funds for the PTA. The Co-op have kindly agreed to support our school for the entire year in their local community fund project which means that every time members purchase selected Co-op branded products, 1% of their value will be donated to our school.

If you would like to support us in this way and are already a Co-op member, please go online and ensure your cause is registered as the Chalkwell Schools PTA. If you are not yet a member, please sign up today and help raise funds for our schools.

Raffle prizes

Over the last few years, we have included raffles at a number of our events which have proved to be very popular and a great way for our charity to raise funds. We are only able to do this thanks to some very generous prize donations by both parents and local businesses. We are currently planning our fundraising events for the year, including our announced Quiz Night in April where we plan to hold our first raffle, and would ask whether you or any businesses you are connected with might be able to support us by kindly offering prizes for inclusion in our raffles. If you are able to help please email PTA at ptachalkwellhall@gmail.com.

Newsletter – 20th April 2018

Welcome back one and all! I hope everyone had a great break. It was fantastic to see how excited the children were to be back at school on Monday, catching up with their friends and ready to go for another busy term.

It’s great that our children want to be here so much but sometimes that causes a bit of a problem after school when they just want to stay and play! Could we please remind everyone (we have told the children many times but they tend to forget) that we ask for no ball games, riding bikes or riding scooters on the playground after school – it’s just too busy with lots of very small children roaming around or in buggies and we don’t want any accidents.

We welcome you to use the library with your child after school but we need to clear the main body of the playground so that after school clubs can start. Also, could we take this opportunity to remind you that no dogs are allowed on site – no matter how small or cute!

Our Year 3s and 4s had a blast today as they started off their new areas of study; Ancient Romans and Greeks all over school being inspired to learn more about their topics and the Romans even witnessed a volcanic eruption!

PTA news

On Friday 18th May 2018 we will be welcoming back Go Bonkers for an Inflatable Fun Day! There will be 11 inflatables for the children to enjoy at one of 2 sessions; 3.30-5.30pm or 6-8pm. Wristbands are £8 per school aged child and £5 per pre-schooler and must be bought in advance and worn at the event. Due to high demand, wristbands will be sold on a first come, first served basis, so to avoid disappointment please return your slips and payment ASAP. Letters have now gone home detailing the event in full.

This week you will have also received letters home asking for your support to have a Coulson James board outside your home that will advertise our Summer Fete on Saturday 30th June 2018, 12-3pm. For every board that goes up, Coulson James have kindly offered to make a donation to the PTA!  Boards will be put up approximately 2 weeks before the fete and taken down a week after. If you are happy to have a board, please email ptachalkwellhall@gmail.com with your name, address and post code.

We are kindly asking for volunteers for both Go Bonkers and the Summer Fete, so if you are able to help in any way or would like more information, please email ptachalkwellhall@gmail.com.   Thank you for your support!

Science success

4SB enjoyed the marble run they got first use of for winning the marble run competition. They built the new one as part of PSHE, having worked together as teams to build the different parts following instructions. You can see the original run they made in the background. The children really enjoyed the experience, and testing out the prize of course!

Sports news

Our cross country runners have been in action at Hadleigh Country Park in the glorious sunshine. They ran in two events over yesterday and today in teams and as individuals. Everyone worked their socks off in tough conditions and did us proud!

Newsletter – 8th February 2018

The end of a busy and productive half term is upon us already. It only seems like yesterday we were coming back from Christmas. Lots achieved so far in 2018 and lots more still to look forward to.

It was great to see so many parents in and around school again this week with open afternoon and lots of people attending our maths workshop on Tuesday with Mr Birkinshaw and Mr Maskell. Some eyes were well and truly opened about how maths has changed from when many of us attended primary school!

Lots of teams in action this week starting with the netballers playing really well in a closely fought 4-3 loss to St Michael’s School on Monday. The girls had plenty of the ball and lots of chances but could quite get the ball in the net often enough to grab the result they deserved.

The boys played two teams over at Hamstel with both A and B running out comfortable winners, 4-0 and 6-0 respectively, in the snowy conditions.

The A team had already played at Bournemouth Park last Friday and came away with a 4-1 win there too.

Newsletter – 26th January 2018

I had the pleasure of attending the latest graduation ceremony of The Children’s University on Tuesday evening at Southend University. Along with 5 other local schools, our latest group of graduates were being awarded diplomas and degrees celebrating the many hours they put in to their extra-curricular activities both in and outside of school. It’s wonderful to see the dedication of the children and their ‘give it a go’ attitudes towards the opportunities offered to them in our many and varied clubs.

Well done to the children for their enthusiasm and thanks to our staff team for giving up so many hours to provide these opportunities. Passports for logging hours attended are available in the office, at a cost of £5, if you would like to sign up and work towards bronze, silver or even gold!

We are on the hunt for help! We have a fantastic team of volunteers who come in and listen to the children read aloud on a regular basis but we are always on the lookout for a few more if you can spare a little bit of time on a regular basis. We have a number of children who really benefit from reading aloud more regularly and there are only so many staff and hours in the school day! If you could offer a little bit of time once a week in the afternoon please contact the office.

We have a position available on our Midday Assistant Team working from 11:45am to 1:15pm every lunchtime as a maternity cover until June. If you are interested please see Mrs Leaback in the office.

 Sports news

Our Year 5&6 boys were in action at the finals of the Bournes Green 6 a side tournament on Saturday. Despite the constant rain and increasingly slippery conditions, the boys dominated their first two games and played some very good football. Unfortunately the opposition goalkeepers were in tremendous form and that meant both games ended up 0-0. The final group game was a must win against the hosts, Bournes Green, and was a more even match but again finished 0-0 which meant we couldn’t quite get through to the semi-finals. Still a good achievement to get through to the finals and a very good defensive performance but we just couldn’t get the ball in the net. Hopefully we will have a bit more luck in front of goal when the boys continue with their league games in the next few weeks!

The Year 3&4 boys are in action this afternoon at the Len Forge Centre against all the other local schools, good luck boys!
