Year 5 Trips – Spring Term 2019

11th February 2019

There are exciting adventures ahead for Year 5! Below are the details of three trips we will be taking the children on next half-term. We may require additional adults on the trips, so if you are able to volunteer on any particular date then please let us know on the reply form. We are very grateful for all help offered, but we often have more volunteers than spaces. Your child’s class teacher will confirm if your help will be needed closer to the trip date.

Science Show at Chase High

On Wednesday 6th March 2019 we will be taking the whole year group to Chase High to watch a Science Show. We will be walking, so please make sure your children have weather appropriate clothing. We will also be having lunch there so would kindly ask for you to provide a packed lunch. This trip is within normal school hours, and we will be back in good time for the end of the day.

Church Visit

To support our Religious Education teaching we will be taking the children to St. Saviours Church to discover more about Holy Week, the celebrations involved and the meaning behind them on Tuesday 2nd April 2019. We will be walking to the Church so again, please ensure that your child has weather appropriate clothing for the journey. This trip will take place in the afternoon and we will be back in time for the end of the school day.

Braintree District Museum

To immerse ourselves into a Victorian way of life, we will be visiting Braintree District Museum where the children will be able to step back in time into a Victorian classroom and take part in activities involving many historical artefacts.

On the day of the trip we would really appreciated it if your child could dress as a Victorian. Please do not go to the expense of buying a costume, we will be discussing ideas in our classes so a DIY job would be fantastic!

5OS and 5CF will be visiting on Monday 18th March 2019.

5DS and 5LR will be visiting on Tuesday 19th March 2019.

The cost of the trip is £13.00 and we ask that your child brings a packed lunch on the day. We will be leaving at 9.00am and will return in time for the end of the school day.  Payment for this trip should be made via the SIMs Agora on-line payment system.  If you have not set up an account yet, please see a member of the office staff who will provide you with an invitation code.  If you are unable to contribute financially, please inform your child’s teacher by letter as soon as possible.

When organising school activities that will enrich the curriculum experience of the children, the school invites parents to contribute towards the cost. All contributions are voluntary, however if we do not receive sufficient contributions, we will have to cancel this visit.

If your child is eligible for free school meals and requires a packed lunch provided by the school on either the 6th March 2019 or the 18th/19th March 2019, please indicate on the slip in the letter.

Yours sincerely,

Mr S. Birkinshaw

Year 4 Visit to Shakespeare’s Globe

The children are thoroughly enjoying our topic this half term and have produced some fantastic drama, artwork, music and written pieces based on ‘The Tempest’. Due to a new found love of Shakespeare, we know that they will love the trip we have planned for them!

On Wednesday 13th February 2019 the whole year group will be visiting ‘Shakespeare’s Globe’, in London, to take part in an organised workshop and tour of the theatre.

We will be travelling by train to Fenchurch Street Station and then will walk to ‘Shakespeare’s Globe’ along the South Bank, taking in the wonderful sights of London along the way. We will have lunch at the theatre, before our workshop and tour begins, and then walk back to Fenchurch Street.

We will be leaving school within normal school times (approximately 9.15am) and aim to arrive back at school by 4.00pm.  Your child will need to wear full school uniform, a warm coat and comfortable shoes (trainers will be allowed for this trip). They will need to bring a packed lunch and water bottle in a bag that they will be carrying all day.  If your child is entitled to free school meals and would like a packed lunch provided by the school, please indicate on the slip in the letter.

The cost of this trip is £13 which includes entrance to Shakepeare’s Globe and travel to and from London.

Due to the nature of this trip we would like to take additional adults therefore, if you are able to join us for the day, please indicate on the form in the letter and we will get back to you as soon as possible to let you know whether we have space for you.

I hope you agree that this will be a fantastic opportunity for the children and, as ever, we thank you for your continued support.

Please return reply slips to your child’s teacher no later than Friday 8th February 2019.

Year 6 School Journey – 23rd September 2019 to 27th September 2019

We had another really successful Year 6 residential in September at Kingswood Grosvenor Hall in Ashford, Kent and we are proposing to go away again at a similar time next year.

A huge advantage of going early in the year is that the children and teachers get to know each other very well on the trip and come back with strong relationships which will help academic progress throughout the rest of their time with us before moving up to secondary school.

I will be holding an information meeting on Wednesday 28th November 2018 at 6.00pm in the lower hall for any parents/carers who would like to attend.

Please have a look online at https://www.kingswood.co.uk/locations/grosvenor-hall/ for some more details in advance of the meeting.

The skills necessary for children to be effective learners include being resilient, organised, sociable, independent and having the ability to work in a team, all of which are enhanced by such weeks.  The increase in self-confidence has helped many children in the past to make the transition to secondary school an easier process as well as having the positive impact on their studies as outlined above.

These centres are booked well in advance and in order to secure our place we must collect deposits by Wednesday 12th December 2018. The total cost of the week includes coach travel, full board, all the activities with provision of all equipment, a school commemorative hoodie and will be £295. We hope this will encourage many to join what has become a very popular event in the lives of children attending our school. A payment schedule is outlined below, with the final payment to be made by Friday 28th June 2019.

Please see payment schedule:

  Amount Payable by
Deposit £40 Wednesday 12th December 2018
2nd payment £85 Friday 1st February 2019
3rd payment £85 Friday 26th April 2019
Final payment £85 Friday 28th June 2019

Those children who do not wish to go will take part in a full activity week back at school, going on activities and visits such as swimming, bowling, Belchamps Activity Centre and to a variety of local places of interest.  We aim to keep the cost of these local visits as low as possible, the approximate cost will be £45.  A letter with further details on this will be sent much nearer the time.

If you would like your child to go on the Kingswood residential trip in September 2019, a non-refundable deposit of £40 will be required by 12th December 2018. Deposits will need to be made through the school’s on-line payment system, SIMs Agora and will be made available to purchase from 29th November 2018 through to 12th December 2018.  Please also complete the slip below and return after the deposit has been paid.   Please note all instalments will be non-refundable once payment has been received by Kingswood.

All payments should be made through our on-line payment system SIMs Agora.  If you have not yet registered, please see a member of the office staff to obtain an invitation code to sign up to the system.

I appreciate it is just before Christmas and I would hate anyone to miss out because of the timing so if this is a struggle for anyone please contact us and we will see how we can help.

Year 3 & 4 PGL Activity Weekend June 2019

Re:  Windmill Hill – PGL Activity Trip: Friday 7th June 2019 to Sunday 9th June 2019

As many of you are aware we have been running a variety of successful residential trips both in the UK and abroad for many years.  Last year we had a hugely successful trip to Windmill Hill PGL Activity Centre taking over 150 Year 3 and 4 children.  We would like to offer the Year 3 and 4 children the opportunity to once again take part in this trip.  The Centre is near Hastings in East Sussex and is a great location to enjoy a variety of outdoor activities.

The children will have the chance to try out a variety of activities such as rafting, archery, team building and many more.  Although I would recommend the children try each activity, they are NOT compulsory and the children are not forced to do anything they don’t want to.  There is also a huge range of food available to choose from at meal times.

The skills identified for children to be effective learners include being organised, sociable, independent and having the ability to work in a team, all of which are enhanced by such residential trips.  These centres are booked well in advance and in order to secure our place we must collect deposits as soon as possible.

The total cost of the weekend which includes coach travel, full board and all the activities with provision of all equipment will be £195.  Whilst we realise this is a lot of money, we feel it is an experience of a lifetime and represents good value for this sort of trip.  The payments would need to be collected in three amounts over the next six months.

If you would like to come and hear more about this trip and ask any questions before you make a decision, we will be holding a meeting in the lower Junior hall on Wednesday 14th November 2018 at 6.00pm.

If you would like your child to go on the residential trip a non-refundable deposit of £65 will be required to secure your child’s place.  Deposits will need to be made through the school’s on-line payment system, SIMs Agora and will be made available to purchase from Thursday 15th November 2018 through to Wednesday 5th December 2018.  Please also complete the slip below and return after the deposit has been paid.   Instalment dates will be notified nearer the time.  Please note instalments will be non-refundable once payment has been received by PGL.

All payment should be made through our on-line payment system SIMs Agora.  If you have not yet registered, please see a member of the office staff to obtain an invitation code to sign up to the system.

Year 3 Visit – Thorndon Country Park – 24th September 2018

In order to enhance our learning this half term, Year 3 will be visiting Thorndon Country Park for a Dinosaur Day. This will enrich our topic by giving children the chance to take part in a variety of dinosaur related activities (eg. fossil hunt, massive maths, land art) using the country park’s open spaces.

We will be travelling by coach.  The cost of travel and the Dinosaur Day led by Essex Country Parks’ Rangers will be £13.50 per child. When organising school activities that will enrich the curriculum experience of the children, the school invites parents to contribute towards the cost.  All contributions are voluntary and, unfortunately, if we do not receive sufficient contributions, we will have to cancel this trip.

On the day of your child’s visit, they will need to come to school at the normal time.  At the end of the visit, we will be leaving Thorndon County Park at 2.30pm so, traffic permitting, we should be back by the end of the school day.

Your child needs to bring a packed lunch with plenty of drinks and a snack for break time (no fizzy drinks or glass bottles).  Essex Country Parks promotes the idea of a ‘waste free lunch’ and we aim to support this by producing the minimal amount of waste and ensuring that we do not leave any rubbish at the Country Park after our visit.  If your child is eligible for free school meals, you can request a packed lunch on the form on the letter.

The Rangers will continue to teach whatever the weather so we ask that the children are fully prepared for the weather conditions.  For this trip it is not necessary for your child to wear school uniform; layers of old warm clothing will be best with a warm waterproof coat/trousers, wellington boots and a hat, scarf and gloves if the weather is poor.  We suggest the children have a pair of shoes (in a named plastic bag) to change into at the end of the visit, before getting back onto the coach.

We will need parental assistance with these trips, so please indicate on the slip if you would like to assist.

Please return the permission slip and contribution to your child’s class teacher in an envelope marked with your child’s name.  If you are unable to contribute financially, please inform your child’s teacher by letter.  Please return reply slips by Monday 17th September 2018.

Yer 4 – Belchamps Scout Activity Centre Visit – 8th October 2018

The Year 4 team have been working hard to plan many exciting opportunities to enhance the curriculum throughout the year. This will begin with a trip to Belchamps Scout Activity Centre in Hawkwell on Monday 8th October 2018. We have planned a fantastic day for the children that will allow them to develop skills of co-operation and perseverance, as well as having fun! This trip will support our PHSE programme and the Physical Education Curriculum.

We will be leaving school at 9.00am and will return in time for the normal end of the school day. Children will be required to bring a healthy snack and drink of water for when we arrive and a packed lunch.   If your child is eligible for free school meals and would like to have a packed lunch provided by the school, please indicate this on the slip on the letter which was sent out on Friday.

We have been advised that the children should wear sports clothes and trainers. They will be working in small groups – encouraging and cheering on their peers.  During the day each group will enjoy four different activities that they will find both challenging and rewarding.

The cost of the trip is £20, which includes the cost of coach travel.  When organising school activities which will enrich the curriculum experience of the children, the school invites parents to contribute towards the cost. All contributions are voluntary, and unfortunately if we do not receive sufficient contributions, we will have to cancel this visit.  Our preferred payment method is the on-line SIMs Agora system.  If you have forgotten your reference number or need assistance with the on line payment system, please see a member of the office staff (the payment system should be back on-line by Monday 10th September 2018).

Please return the permission slip and contribution, if you are unable to pay on-line, to your child’s class teacher in an envelope marked with your child’s name. If you are unable to contribute financially please inform your child’s teacher by letter. Please complete the slip below and return to your child’s teacher by Friday 28th September 2018.

Year 5 – Nuclear Races Trip – 14th September 2018

The new Year 5 team have been working very hard to plan many exciting opportunities to enhance the curriculum through the next academic year. This will begin with a trip to the Nuclear Races in Brentwood on Friday 14th September 2018.  We have planned a fantastic day for the children that will allow them to develop skills of co-operation and perseverance, as well as having an amazing amount of fun! This trip will support our PHSE programme and the Physical Education curriculum.

We will be leaving school at 9.00am and will return in time for the normal end of the school day. Children will be required to bring a healthy snack and drink of water for when we arrive and a packed lunch.   If your child is eligible for free school meals and would like to have a packed lunch provided by the school, please indicate this on the slip below.

We have been advised that participants should wear sports clothes and trainers and bring a complete change of clothes (including shoes). They will get wet and muddy, which – as you know – is part of what makes these days so enjoyable and fun, hence old clothes might also be a good idea! It would be helpful if children could also bring an empty black bag to put their wet clothes in. We will return them to you fed, dry (not necessarily clean!), exhausted but happy!

The cost of the trip is £21, which includes the cost of coach travel. If you have forgotten your reference number or need assistance with the on line payment system, please see a member of the office staff.

The Nuclear Race organisers require an online registration form and disclaimer to be completed. Your child will not be allowed to take part unless this is filled in before race day. The form can be accessed at:   https://www.njuko.net/chalkwellschool

If you are unable to contribute financially please inform your child’s teacher by letter. Please complete the slip on the letter and return to your child’s teacher by Friday 7th September 2018.

PGL Activity Weekend: Friday 8th June 2018 to Sunday 10th June 2018

As you are aware we are soon to take your children on the yearly PGL weekend.  We will be kitting them out with a hooded sweat top each.  This helps us enormously in identifying our children whilst travelling out and about and also to identify them on site.  It will also make a lasting memento of the visit.  The cost of the hooded top has been included in the overall price of the trip, therefore all we need you to do is return the slip giving your child’s name and hoodie size.  Please note once you have stated the size below, the hooded top cannot be changed.

PLEASE RETURN THE SLIP BY NO LATER THAN TUESDAY 8TH MAY 2018.

We will be holding a final meeting for all parents on Wednesday 23rd May 2018 at 6.30pm to inform you of  details regarding the trip.
