Christmas Movie Night

Do you need some extra Christmas shopping time but you have to get back for the school run at 3.15pm?  Don’t worry – we are here to help!  After having run these successful events for the past two years, we will again be running a Christmas movie and hot dog night.

Our team of volunteers will supervise the children and screen a Christmas film to keep them entertained.  Hot dogs, popcorn and a drink will be served to keep the children’s hunger at bay!  All for a bargain price of £5.  The Christmas films on offer are listed below.  Children need to tick a first and second choice movie on the reply slip in the letter. We will endeavour to keep year groups together where possible.

What time:         3:15pm – 5:30pm                                 Cost:     £5

Christmas Movie Night Nov 19

Newsletter – 15th November 2019

Our book fair is on next week, Monday to Friday, so please make a little time available at the end of the day to come in and have a look in the lower hall. We’ll make sure that the children have a chance to have a look during school hours too. All proceeds go to helping us keep the library really well stocked with interesting reads!

We are also looking for any volunteers that might like to help out in the library itself in the period at the end of the day from 2:50pm until around 3:30pm when we have the library open for parents to visit when doing pick up. If anyone has any spare time at the end of the school day they could offer it would be very gratefully received!

Please find attached an updated school dinner menu – next week is week 1.

Year 5 Southchurch Hall Trip

Year 5 Southchurch Hall Trip

The Year 5 team have been working very hard to plan many exciting opportunities to enhance the curriculum throughout the year. Our trip this term will be to Southchurch Hall situated at the heart of Southchurch Hall Gardens, as part of our ‘Who was the real Horrid Henry?’ topic.

We have a fantastic half day planned for the children that will allow them to immerse themselves in our Tudor-based topic, especially focusing on Christmas traditions from this time. This trip will support many subjects across the Curriculum.

Class 5JT will be going on Friday 29th November 2019 at 9:15am, travelling by train and returning by lunchtime.

Class 5CF will be going on Tuesday 3rd December 2019 at 9:15am, travelling by train and returning by lunchtime. This will be followed by Class 5JW at 12 noon, to return to school by home time.

Class 5DS will be going on Friday 6th December 2019 at 9:15am, travelling by train and returning by lunchtime. This will be followed by Class 5LR at 12 noon, to return to school by home time.

All children will be required to bring a healthy snack, drink of water and a packed lunch.  If your child is entitled to free school meals and requires a packed lunch provided by the school, please request this on the slip on the letter. Children will need to wear school uniform and have suitable outerwear for the weather.

The cost of the trip is £7.00, including the cost of train travel. When organising school activities which will enrich the curriculum experience of the children, the school invites parents to contribute towards the cost. All contributions are voluntary, and unfortunately if we do not receive sufficient contributions, we will have to cancel this visit.  If you are unable to contribute financial, please inform your child’s teacher by letter.

Payment should be made through the SIMs Pay on-line payment system.  If you have forgotten your invitation code or need assistance with SIMs Pay, please see a member of the office staff.

We will require parental assistance on this trip, so please indicate on the reply slip if you are available or speak directly to your child’s class teacher. Any assistance offered is greatly appreciated.

Newsletter – 8th November 2019

You may see some very tired children and teachers at the end of the day today and that’s because last night 18 children and 8 adults braved the Big Sleep In to raise money for HARP. In an effort to replicate and understand a little better the conditions faced by people that find themselves homeless, the children had to make sleeping quarters from what they could find laying around and then try to function properly today at school after very little rest. A great effort from those involved in school and at home, well done!

We have had some very interesting days in the different year groups this week as new topics have been introduced to stimulate the children’s curiosity. We’ve had an “Incredible” day today in Year 4, all things Tudor in Year 5, a dive into Parvana’s Journey in Year 6 and even a game of quidditch in Year 3!

A reminder that the deadline for deposits for the Year 3&4 PGL trip next year is the 4th December and that tickets for parents to attend the Young Voices event at the O2 Arena are £23 each. Please return the form to school with cash or a cheque made payable to Chalkwell Hall Junior School by Friday 15th November 2019.

Sports news

Our basketball team performed superbly in the first round of the borough tournament on Wednesday, winning both their matches to progress through to the finals in a few weeks – great work team!

Our Year 6 boys played against Leigh North Street last night and put in a great shift despite losing 4-1 on the day. Great team spirit and they represented Chalkwell Hall superbly!

Year 5 Visit to Southend and Westcliff Hebrew Congregation

Dear Parents/Carers,

As part of our RE topic work this half term on the Jewish Synagogue, we have arranged a visit to the Southend & Westcliff Hebrew Congregation in Finchley Road, Westcliff. Children must dress in their school uniform, however, boys will need to also bring a hat/baseball cap to wear inside the synagogue.

As we will be leaving during lunch time, please provide your child with a packed lunch to have at school before departure. If your child is entitled to free school meals, and requires a packed lunch provided by the school, please indicate on the slip in the letter.

We will be walking to and from the venue and will be back at school before 3.15pm for normal going home arrangements.  If you are happy for your child to participate in this enrichment activity, you do not need to return the slip below.

The classes will be visiting the synagogue on the following days:

Monday 11th November 2019:  5JT and 5LR

Tuesday 12th November 2019:  5DS and 5JW

Monday 18th November 2019:  5CF

Please indicate, by the date of the trip, if you do not give permission for your child to attend the synagogue.

Thank you for your continued co-operation.

Year 5 – PG Rated Film

As part of Y5’s creative curriculum we would like to watch the PG rated film ‘Maleficent’. The film is for general viewing and we feel fits perfectly with our current topic about The Tudors.  We are using it as a comparison with Macbeth by William Shakespeare. If you are happy for your child to participate in this enrichment activity, you do not need to return the slip.

We will be watching the film on Friday 8th November 2019. Please indicate, by this date, on the slip in the letter which was sent out, only if you do not give permission for your child to watch ‘Maleficent’.

Thank you for your continued co-operation.

Newsletter – 18th October 2019

A really busy week here at school with parent meetings, sports events and even a visit from The Music Man Project (https://themusicmanproject.com/) to finish off this morning. Watching the musicians perform was genuinely inspiring for all and a fantastic experience for our children. There is a video on our Facebook page if you would like to see for yourself!

It was great to welcome everyone in for parent meetings and a reminder that we have open afternoon from 2:45-3:15 next Tuesday where you can come in and have a chat with your child in class about what they have been studying. Please make sure that you head off by 3:15 please as teachers will have meetings to go to and clubs to run!

Sports news

Our Tag Rugby team competed in the annual tournament at Southend RFC on Wednesday. They represented us brilliantly coming 2nd in their group in the morning to move on to the “super 10s” but couldn’t quite make it through to the semi finals after coming 3rd in the next group. They played some superb passing rugby on their way to an overall placing of 5th out of the 15 schools competing, which is a great result – well played team!

Our Year 5&6 girls are taking part in a football tournament today at The Len Forge Centre and have so far won all their games – good luck for the rest of the competition!

Year 6 Residential Journey in September 2020 (for current Y5!)

We had another really successful Year 6 residential this September and we are proposing to go away again at a similar time next year.

A huge advantage of going early in the year is that the children and teachers get to know each other very well on the trip and come back with strong relationships which will help academic progress throughout the rest of their time with us before moving up to secondary school.

I will be holding an information meeting on Wednesday 20th November 2019 at 6.00pm for any parents/carers who would like to attend.

Please have a look online at https://www.pgl.co.uk/en-gb/adventure-holidays/centres/marchants-hill for some more details in advance of the meeting.

The attributes children need to be effective learners include being resilient, organised, sociable, independent and having the ability to work in a team, all of which are enhanced by such weeks.  The increase in self-confidence has helped many children in the past to make the transition to secondary school an easier process as well as having the positive impact on their studies as outlined above.

These centres are booked well in advance and in order to secure our place we must collect deposits by Wednesday 4th December 2019. The total cost of the week includes coach travel, full board, all the activities with provision of all equipment, a school commemorative hoodie and will be £295. We hope this will encourage many to join what has become a very popular event in the lives of children attending our school. A payment schedule is outlined below, with the final payment to be made by Friday 3rd July 2020.

Please see payment schedule:

  Amount Payable by
Deposit £55 Wednesday 4th December 2019
2nd payment £80 Friday 31st January 2020
3rd payment £80 Friday 1st May 2020
Final payment £80 Friday 3rd July 2020

Those children who do not wish to go will take part in a full activity week back at school, going on activities and visits such as Kids Kingdom, mini-golf, Belchamps Activity Centre and to a variety of local places of interest.  We aim to keep the cost of these local visits as low as possible, the approximate cost will be £50.  A letter with further details on this will be sent nearer the time.

If you would like your child to go on the PGL residential trip in September 2020, a non-refundable deposit of £55 will be required by 4th December 2019. Deposits will need to be made through the school’s on-line payment system, SIMs Pay and will be made available to purchase from 21st November 2019 through to 4th December 2019.  Please also complete the slip attached to the letter and return after the deposit has been paid.   Please note all instalments will be non-refundable once payment has been received by PGL.

All payments should be made through our on-line payment system SIMs Pay.  If you have not yet registered, please see a member of the office staff to obtain an invitation code to sign up to the system.

I would hate anyone to miss out because of the cost so if this is a struggle, particularly for those whose children are eligible for free school meals or pupil premium, please contact us and we will see how we can help.
